I. Multiculturalism (5/6/93)
The Board of School Trustees recognizes the population of the School City of Hobart is comprised of a variety of ethnic, cultural, religious and racial groups. Individual classrooms, as well as schools, reflect this diverse population. It is the responsibility of school staffs, working in concert with central office personnel, to assist children and adults to learn to appreciate the individual differences and similarities of all populations while at the same time ensuring equal treatment for all.

II. Smoking and other Tobacco Uses (9/15/94)
The School City of Hobart is dedicated to providing a healthy, comfortable, and productive environment for students, staff, and citizens. The Board supports the provisions of the Indiana Clean Indoor Air Law and the federal Goals 2000: Educate America Act, and as such, remains committed to the notion of reducing involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke among students, staff, and visitors. The Board believes that the use of tobacco products in school buildings and school owned or contract vehicles denies students, staff, and visitors access to clean air, introduces a substantial health hazard to those persons, and interferes with learning and teaching.

It is the intent of the Board to create a "tobacco-free" school environment. Appropriately, the Board shall totally prohibit the use of all tobacco products by students, staff, and visitors in school buildings and in school owned or contract vehicles. In addition, smoking will not be permitted in outdoor seating or under bleachers at any time. The administration may designate outdoor locations outside of each building where smoking will not be permitted.

The adoption of this policy is primarily to enhance and promote air cleanliness in the buildings and in school-owned or contracted vehicles in which students, staff, and patrons travel to and from school and school events and activities. Further, it will serve as an educational incentive for students, staff, and patrons to adopt healthier life styles.
