The jobs of quilting, husking corn, soap making, butchering, apple butter making, house-raising were good times that neighbors shared. These were called "bees." Neighbors would bring a dish of food, and help each other with chores. Usually square dancing followed. Churches and schools helped to furnish entertainment, too. Spelling Bees, "ciphering" matches, debates, and big dinners with a program aftrerwards were often given.
